Theominía – Wrath of the Gods

Agency: DDB Athens

Description

Theominía is a word commonly used in modern-day Greece to describe a major natural disaster or extreme weather event. Literally translating to “the wrath of God” (Theos = God + menis = wrath), the term harks back to ancient times, when natural disasters such as wildfires, floods and earthquakes were interpreted as divine punishment, the cruel whims of the Gods against which humans were powerless.

Today, of course, we know better.

Science tells us that climate change has had a crucial part to play in the increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters. For October 13, International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, Interamerican’s campaign lets us know that “Act of God” is no longer an excuse. Climate change is a human act, and it is up to humans to take responsibility, by staying informed, building resilience and taking action to mitigate its most devastating effects.
