The Austrian Bike Bell – Austria develops the world’s friendliest bike bell.
As the world's friendliest holiday destination, Austria is launching a specially developed multi-tone bike bell designed to make streets around the world just a little friendlier. Created by Austria Tourism in collaboration with Wien Nord Serviceplan and renowned austrian music experts, the Austrian Bike Bell serves as a symbol of the diverse cycling experiences Austria has to offer.
The fact that the sound of a traditional bike bell often creates stress on the streets has become an increasingly relevant topic. As Europe's friendliest travel destination (according to Condé Nast Traveller) and a country with a rich musical heritage, Austria is uniquely positioned to make a statement. The goal was to create a new sound inspired by the moments people experience while cycling through Austria – joyful laughter, clinking glasses, warm greetings – and transform them into a tone with a distinctly positive and friendly character.
Together with internationally renowned composer and music expert Walter Werzowa, Austria Tourism developed a fully mechanical bell system. Four differently tuned bells ring simultaneously, producing a rich multi-tone sound that feels more like a small musical gesture than a conventional bike bell. The composition is based on authentic sounds from Austria, translating the country's hospitality into a distinctive new acoustic identity.
The Austrian Bike Bell is intentionally presented as a gift to the world. To make the idea as accessible as possible, Austria Tourism has made all construction files available free of charge as open source. The 3D-print blueprints can be downloaded at austrianbikebell.com, allowing anyone to build, adapt, and locally manufacture the bell anywhere in the world. The website also offers insights into the creative process and the story behind the project.
The Austrian Bike Bell launched simultaneously in Germany, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic. The international rollout was supported by local activations, test rides, and collaborations with influencers who introduced the bell in real-life cycling situations. The campaign is accompanied by a launch film, produced together with ForaUltra, which tells the story of the Austrian Bike Bell as an artistic journey through Austria's soundscape, bringing together music, hospitality, and the cycling experience in an emotional way.
