In Uruguay, 4 out of 5 circulating coins feature native animals. Today, all four of those species are under threat. What people handle every day as loose change is, in fact, a silent reminder of a disappearing ecosystem — one that is increasingly ignored. But biodiversity loss is not only an environmental issue — it is a growing public health crisis. As species decline, ecosystems begin to collapse, affecting the quality of air, water, and food systems that human life depends on. This campaign removes these animals from the coins, turning a familiar national symbol into a powerful absence — a visual representation of what is at risk of being lost. Because while losing a coin has no value, losing these species has irreversible consequences for the health of our planet and ourselves. Created for Coendú, the campaign invites people to donate to help protect Uruguay’s threatened wildlife and preserve the natural systems that sustain life.
