Happy View
Description
In celebration of Children’s Month and National Reading Day on October 12, McDonald’s presents Happy View, an initiative that transforms the Happy Meal box into a playful tool for raising awareness about children’s eye health. Developed in partnership with Hospital CEMA, a leading Brazilian institution in ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology for 50 years, Happy View reimagines the experience of looking through the Golden Arches as a playful way to give children a simple, quick, and welcoming initial visual acuity screening.
As part of the initiative, McDonald’s and Hospital CEMA are joining forces on October 10, 11, and 12 (Saturday through Monday) to offer free eye screenings for children ages 3 to 13. Conducted by Hospital CEMA specialists, the screenings will take place at one of the fast-food flagships in São Paulo.
“Happy Meal is part of the childhood experience of millions of families. And to us, supporting childhood means helping children learn, discover, and unlock their full potential. Good vision is a key part of that. Around 20% of school-age children have a vision problem, and many cases go unnoticed by both children and their families. With Happy View, we want to use the reach and familiarity of one of our most iconic offerings to shine a light on the issue, encourage parents to pay attention to their children’s eye health from an early age, and bring the topic into family conversations,” says Ilca Sierra, Chief Marketing Officer of McDonald’s Brazil.
“Finding creative ways to bring health services to places frequented by families helps us reach the people who need this information most. Our partnership with McDonald’s gives us an incredible platform to remind families that caring for children’s vision is an essential way to show love, prevent problems, and protect their future,” says Dr. Sandro Ribeiro, an ophthalmologist at Hospital CEMA.
“When two brands with a strong presence and reputation in their respective sectors come together around a shared purpose, the impact can go far beyond business. Happy View is a perfect example: by combining our brands’ reach, we’re bringing a message of prevention and care to places families already visit, thus creating an accessible, welcoming experience that makes healthcare part of everyday life. For Hospital CEMA, it’s also a way to reaffirm our commitment to making prevention an increasingly important part of people’s lives,” says Cesar Augusto Cunha, Market Relations Director at Hospital CEMA.
The timing of the initiative is no coincidence. In a month that celebrates childhood and reading, eye health takes center stage. Vision conditions such as myopia, hyperopia, amblyopia and strabismus can go unnoticed while affecting how children learn, connect with others and thrive at school. The Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology (CBO*) estimates that around 20% of school-age children have some form of visual impairment.
“Happy View was born from the question of how we could leverage the familiarity of the Happy Meal to bring this topic into family conversations and raise awareness of an issue that may go unnoticed during a decisive stage of development,” says Rodrigo Marangoni, Executive Creative Director at GALERIA.
The initiative has been in development for more than a year by GALERIA, the agency responsible for McDonald’s account in Brazil. The prototype was created jointly by the agency and the creative hub Magic Lab, with guidance from Hospital CEMA and support from Sphera Comunicação e Reputação, the agency responsible for the hospital’s brand strategy.
How the Happy View Experience Works
The special-edition Happy Meal box is part of a technical kit developed in partnership with Hospital CEMA. It includes five sets of refractive lenses, with powers ranging from +2 to −3 diopters, and a pinhole test (stenopeic aperture). The experience was designed in two complementary stages:
Stage 1 — Visual Acuity Screening: From a few meters away, the child looks through the lenses built into the box at a special poster based on the LEA test. This playful activity helps quickly identify potential signs of refractive errors.
Stage 2 — Fundus Examination: The child then undergoes a fundus examination, during which CEMA’s ophthalmology team examines the retina and other eye structures to assess overall eye health and guide families on any necessary next steps.
