“Fragile Christmas Wafer” is a handcrafted Christmas visual created for Liga proti rakovine (Slovak League Against Cancer), reflecting the emotional vulnerability that many oncology patients experience during the holiday season. While Christmas is commonly associated with joy, togetherness, and certainty, for cancer patients and their families it often becomes a time filled with fragile hope and unanswered questions about what lies ahead.
The campaign draws on a deeply rooted Slovak Christmas tradition. Every year, Liga proti rakovine organizes pre-holiday creative workshops where oncology patients hand-make traditional Christmas wafers — delicate, paper-thin treats that symbolize the beginning of Christmas Eve. These wafers are extremely fragile and often break, naturally becoming a metaphor for the emotional and physical vulnerability of patients facing cancer.
For the visual, a wafer handmade by one of the patients was intentionally broken and then carefully stitched back together. A thin yellow thread was used to reconnect the fragments into a single piece. The thread symbolizes the gentle yet powerful bond created by Liga proti rakovine — connecting patients, families, doctors, and experts, and holding the community together during one of the most sensitive times of the year.
The entire visual was created manually using real materials and crafted by hand. In a time when AI-generated imagery is increasingly common, the authenticity and physical craft of the piece reinforce the sincerity of the message and the real human stories behind it.
