Description
Did you know the Philippines now has the largest transgender population in Asia? That’s around 239,000 trans Filipinos, according to the World Population Review.
But here’s the thing: while more trans creators are stepping into the spotlight, what they often get in return isn’t love—it’s hate, mockery, and harsh criticism.
That’s why LGBTQI+ rights group Babaylanes teamed up with DDB MNL to launch “Play Through the Hate”—a movement that turns something as simple as watching a video into a powerful act of support.
At the heart of this campaign are inspiring trans creators like Kylie Celebrie, Rica Salmon, Stef Aranas, Bam Terol, and Killian Perez, along with a growing community of queer voices. Their message is simple but strong: post proudly, speak loudly, and ask your community to hit play—and stay.
Why does it matter? Because watching a video from start to finish tells the algorithm: “Hey, this is important.” It helps that content reach more people, gain more visibility, and spark more conversations. If we play through the hate - we turn it on its head and turn negativity into support.
“Trans Filipinos are already out here—creating, expressing, living,” says Jap Ignacio, Executive Director of Babaylanes. “But visibility shouldn’t come with a price. It should come with support. The algorithm can’t silence us if you hit play.”
This isn’t just about boosting views. It’s about representation. It’s about dignity. It’s about making the online world a safer, kinder, and more inclusive space for everyone.
So this PRIDE season, we’re inviting everyone—trans folks, queer folks, allies, advocates, and anyone who cares—to join in. Create and share your stories, whether it’s a lip sync, a day-in-the-life vlog, or a simple message of love and support.
Let’s #PlayThroughTheHate—and make sure these voices get the love they deserve.
WHY DOES PLAY THROUGH THE HATE MATTER?
Hate and trolls are unavoidable online especially for minority creators like trans people. While we cannot end the hate, we can turn it on its head and make it benefit trans creators.
Playing through trans creator videos from start to finish is a low-effort, no cost way for every Filipino to be able to support and uplift trans voices.
When trans creators get more views and more engagement, it helps in creating a world that is not just “tolerant” but truly accepting of diversity and equality.
