Description
On the streets, words like Orobo, Fatty Bum Bum, and Apáti are often thrown around casually as jokes or nicknames. But behind the laughter is a deeper reality of body-shaming that normalizes unhealthy lifestyles while masking a serious health issue. By turning familiar street slangs into a bold visual metaphor of heavy speech bubbles, we symbolize the weight of these labels society places on people. The message is simple but powerful - obesity should not be reduced to slang or ridicule. It is a real health concern that deserves awareness, empathy, and action. Timed for World Obesity Day, the work uses relatable Nigerian expressions to spark conversation, encourage self-reflection, and remind people that true wellness begins with taking our health seriously, not laughing it off. The visual combines photo manipulation with 3D typography, turning familiar slangs into large, weighty objects within a realistic scene. This hybrid makes the words feel physically heavy and impactful, reinforcing the idea that labels about body size carry real weight.
Meaning of the Local Slangs Orobo: A widely used Nigerian slang (especially in Yoruba-influenced urban culture) for a plus-sized or overweight person. Sometimes used playfully, but often carries a teasing or body-shaming tone. Fatty Bum Bum: A pop-culture phrase used to describe someone with large body size, heavy hips or buttocks. It can be used jokingly but is frequently associated with mocking weight. Apáti: A Yoruba slang term commonly used to describe someone who is very big or overweight, often said humorously but also capable of sounding derogatory depending on context.
