Visually impaired and blind individuals face significant challenges navigating the world and are at high risk both indoors and outdoors. Despite the use of echolocation, walking canes, and service dogs, the harsh reality is that 95% of them collide with obstacles while walking along roads, and 40% suffer falls after hitting obstacles, often resulting in injuries and fractures.
At Volvo, we are committed to safety by incorporating advanced features such as LiDAR technology in our cars for autonomous navigation. To address these challenges and prioritize blind people's safety, we introduce Vision Mate – An app that harnesses the full potential of LiDAR, a powerful technology hidden in our pockets, combined with AI to improve accessibility and safety for visually impaired individuals.
