Wikipedia Turns 25, Celebrates The Humans Who Make Knowledge Possible In New Docuseries

Amid the division, erosion of trust and broader conversations about facts that are defining our current reality, Wikipedia has been called “the last best place on the internet.” The internet we were promised - a place where people can discuss, debate and ultimately agree on the facts. To celebrate Wikipedia turning 25, marking a quarter century of making trustworthy, human-powered knowledge accessible worldwide, the Wikimedia Foundation (the nonprofit that operates Wikipedia) has launched a new campaign today inviting everyone to discover Wikipedia's journey since launching, celebrate the volunteers who make the site possible, and be part of the platform's future.

Developed in partnership with purpose-led creative shop Kin, this campaign centers around a first-of-its-kind "video "docuseries" sharing a behind-the-scenes look at the lives and stories of Wikipedia volunteer editors around the world. All of the knowledge on Wikipedia is created and maintained by a global community of nearly 250,000 volunteer editors who write, edit, and fact check information according to rigorous standards on neutrality and reliability.

The series stars eight of these editors and their unique purpose and passions for contributing to the online encyclopedia. They include a Californian who has spent two decades documenting hurricanes and storms, an Indian medical doctor who shared critical COVID-19 information during the global pandemic, an elderly librarian in Tokyo making knowledge available in Japanese, a New Haven, Connecticut based photographer known as “The Singing Photographer” who shares photos that truly represent Black culture, and more. Their stories underscore that, even and especially in the age of AI, knowledge is human, and knowledge needs humans.

In the lead up to the anniversary, Kin also worked with Wikipedia on a 90-sec brand anthem film which was released in late 2025 on YouTube, re-energizing public appreciation and support for Wikipedia’s mission ahead of the anniversary, inspiring new donors, contributors, and readers alike to keep this free, human-powered platform thriving.

“25 years ago Wikipedia was a dream - a wildly ambitious and probably impossible dream...(now) it’s 25 years of knowledge, collaboration, consensus and humanity at its best,” the film details. A creative nod to Wikipedia’s collaborative spirit and commitment to open knowledge, the film is built entirely from visual assets from Wikimedia Commons.

Sourced from across the globe, the visuals feature various global events, cultural references, and easter eggs within over 700 images and videos. Directed by international artist, photographer and director, Adrian Yu of Excetera, the campaign centers around authenticity and inclusivity, featuring real contributors, readers, and editors across continents. The film’s voiceover and structure also mirror the rhythm of human contribution — showing how millions of hands and minds, across languages and generations, have built something truly collective.

“In a world shaped by algorithms, misinformation, and endless noise, Wikipedia reminds us of something simple and profound — the joy of learning, the power of curiosity, and the beauty of knowledge built by people, for people." says Sophie Ozoux, co-founder at Kin.

"This campaign is our love letter to that human network — the quiet, collective brilliance behind the world’s largest collaborative project." adds Kwame Taylor-Hayford. co-Founder at Kin.

"Wikipedia is one of the world's best examples of the human potential to create something meaningful through collaboration. This campaign embodies that spirit, highlighting the people who make this global knowledge resource possible." — Zack McCune, Director of Global Brand at the Wikimedia Foundation.

To kick off the yearlong anniversary celebration, the Foundation also launched a "25 Years of Wikipedia" time capsule and new interactive quiz, with additional elements rolling out throughout the year. Kin was also involved in creating select social media elements to support the campaign, including a new feature on social media to "sign" Wikipedia's digital birthday card — helping to make it the longest birthday card ever.

This professional campaign titled 'The future of knowledge is yours to protect.' was published in United States in January, 2026. It was created for the brand: Wikipedia, by ad agency: Kin. This Integrated medium campaign is related to the Education industry and contains 1 media asset. It was submitted 4 minutes ago.
