May 12 marks International Nurses Day. While the world celebrates nurses' vital role in building strong healthcare systems, Nigeria's spotlight remains fixed on doctors leaving the country, overlooking the silent exodus of nurses. Yet, nurses are the foundation that keeps the healthcare system standing. For every doctor, there are at least five nurses. Without them, the system collapses. They are the true backbone of healthcare. To honor their invaluable contribution, we use one of the body's most essential structures; the spine as a visual metaphor. Nurses are aligned shoulder to shoulder to form the vertebrae of a human spine, symbolizing the strength, support, and structure they provide to the healthcare system.
