Point of view

Agency: Hungry Minds

Description

In Belgium, one person in 100 is visually impaired. However, the majority of Belgian is still unaware of this condition, which leads to incomprehension and a lack of empathy. EQLA, an association which helps blind and visually impaired people in Belgium, wanted to raise public awareness of the many forms of visual impairment that exist, in an impactful way and on a limited budget.

To make these many forms of disability visible, we met 4 visually impaired people. They shared with us their daily lives, their difficulties, the misunderstandings they face... And explained how they see the world. Based on their descriptions, we reproduced their vision on plexiglass panels. We installed them on 4 of the most iconic panoramas in Belgium. Each person who gave a testimonial then invited a close friend to discover the installation, and at the same time gain a better understanding of the visually impaired person's experience. For 10 days, tourists and passers-by were able to rediscover these breathtaking landscapes through new eyes: those of the visually impaired. It was also an opportunity to change the way we think about the visually impaired.

The campaign was also rolled out online. On Instagram, we created filters reproducing the different forms of visual impairment. These filters were taken up by a number of influencers on a voluntary basis.
