Ukraine is today the most heavily mined country in the world. Unexploded landmines pose a constant and deadly threat to children who play, go to school and move around their local communities. Many of these mines lie hidden in places that appear safe – and to a child, they can look harmless or even exciting to pick up.
What is a once-a-year warning in Denmark, around New Year’s Eve, is a daily reality for children in Ukraine.
That is why Save the Children works with the local partner UDA in eastern Ukraine. UDA holds the special licence required to remove landmines, and together we clear contaminated areas so children can move more safely. At the same time, we teach children how to recognise and avoid dangerous objects, giving them the knowledge they need to protect themselves.
Once a year, we remind children in Denmark never to go back to a dud.
For children in Ukraine, that warning applies all year round.
