Description
South Africa's women's national football team - Banyana Banyana - broke the ultimate glass ceiling by becoming the first South African football team (men or women) to progress out of the group stages at a FIFA World Cup. Coincidentally, it is Women's Month in South Africa in August and on 9 August we observe *Women's Day as a public holiday.
*The day commemorates the 1956 march of approximately 20,000 women to the Union Buildings in Pretoria, South Africa to petition against the country's pass laws that required South Africans defined as "black" under The Population Registration Act to carry an internal passport, known as a passbook, that served to maintain population segregation, control urbanisation, and manage migrant labour during the apartheid era.
