Description
After a tourist posted on Reddit asking how to “silence” the coquí—calling its song annoying, Puerto Rico reacted immediately. For locals, the coquí isn’t noise. It’s identity.
That moment inspired Coquí Alarmed, a campaign by Hyundai Puerto Rico and BBDO Puerto Rico that replaced the factory lock and unlock alarm sound of Hyundai rental cars with the real call of the coquí across AVIS, Enterprise and Charlie Car Rental locations.
Beyond symbolism, the coquí’s call plays a vital role in reproduction, helping males and females find each other to mate. By using this natural sound, Hyundai turned a daily interaction into a cultural response and a conservation effort, welcoming visitors with the sound that represents Puerto Rico the loudest.
