Description
Big wireless bills are enough to make anyone rant. Just ask world renowned internet ranting football coach Mike Gundy. The famed Oklahoma State head coach reprised his 2007 “I’m a man, I’m 40” press conference moment on behalf of Consumer Cellular Inc, this time redirecting his fury at overpriced phone plans instead of sports reporting.
The :30s spot – part cultural parody, part generational rallying cry – was crafted by creative AOR THE MAYOR to put a humorous spin on a sports milestone that Gen X fans will never forget.
“Coach Gundy’s ‘I’m 40’ moment isn’t just iconic—it’s inseparable from age and a moment in time.” said Carter Nance, VP of Brand at Consumer Cellular. “That makes it the perfect platform for Consumer Cellular to show fellow 50+ sports fans why we’re the smart alternative to Big Wireless.”
Coach Grundy is no longer 40, and as his fans cross into their 50s, CCI is reminding them they’re not too young to save.
Coach Gundy makes aging a badge of pride. You get tougher, smarter, and more savings-savvy with age. In the spot, Coach channels the same passion that made his 2007 rant famous, declaring that Big Wireless rate hikes “make him wanna puke” and urging fans to see how much they can cut from their bills by switching to Consumer Cellular.
First launched on X by sports reporter Brett McMurphy, Gundy 2025 will run during related college football programming nationwide, including a high-profile TV debut during the Oregon vs. Oklahoma State game on 9.6.
On X, the spot has already blown up, generating over 1 million views in a day.
This marks the latest work from CCI and THE MAYOR’s ongoing partnership, which continues to leverage cultural moments and beloved talent to speak directly to audiences over 50. From Ted Danson to NASCAR, The Masters, and now, college football, the brand’s ongoing creative collaborations prove that saving money doesn’t mean sacrificing fun, relevance, or fandom.
“Coach Gundy’s press conference rant is one of those cultural moments for college football fans,” said Tom Hamling, Founder and CCO of THE MAYOR. “It’s basically a 20 year old meme that resurfaces every year. So, we loved the idea of revisiting it - not just for nostalgia sake, but to make 50+ people stop and think that if Coach made the change to CCI…maybe I should, too.”
Gundy 2025 will run across TV, digital, and socials, throughout the season, ensuring football fans everywhere are reminded that it pays to switch to Consumer Cellular once you hit the big 5-0. THE MAYOR has worked in partnership with CCI since early 2024 to support the brand in their mission to be the most beloved wireless company in the nation.
