Earthrise announce CLIMATE+, a brand new, five-part video series with Oxfam that delves into the multifaceted relationship between climate change and social justice issues.

Launching on Monday 8th July, the five episodes will be distributed weekly across YouTube, Instagram and TikTok, as well as hosted on Oxfam's website.

Focusing on the intersectionality of climate justice, each CLIMATE+ episode focuses on a different theme - gender, conflict, class, health, and colonialism. Through these narratives, the films aim to highlight the urgency of addressing climate change through a lens of social justice and equity.

In the first episode, CLIMATE+ GENDER, Climate+ activist Joyce Koech shares how women and girls face the worst impacts of climate change, yet are often excluded from solutions. This first episode highlights how deeply intertwined climate change and gender equality are, and how amplifying the voices of the widely disregarded, especially women and girls from the Global South, plays a crucial part in climate resilience around the world.

The series also addresses the interconnectedness of climate change with conflict. The second episode: CLIMATE+ CONFLICT explores how around the world, conflicts are rising, often worsened by the climate crisis. Droughts, floods, and scarce resources push people into desperate situations, increasing the risk of armed conflict and social unrest, particularly in climate-vulnerable regions like Sudan. This episode highlights how the climate crisis can fuel existing tensions, making conflict more likely and recovery much harder, and addresses the need to address these issues together.

Episode three, CLIMATE+CLASS critiques the predominantly white, middle-class climate activism in the UK and highlights the severe consequences faced by marginalised communities, who are often those that are most affected by the climate crisis. In the UK, lower-income areas face much more pollution, and are more prone to extreme weather; heatwaves, storms, flooding, and worse. Not to mention the financial strain from rising food prices caused in part by climate change. This episode calls for an inclusive approach that ensures a just transition towards a sustainable future, reflecting the voices and needs of those most affected.

Episode four, CLIMATE+ HEALTH looks at the impact of climate change on individual health and how, as the climate crisis intensifies, human health suffers across the globe. Heatwaves, droughts, wildfires, and floods disrupt vital resources, infrastructure, and healthcare systems, leading to wide-ranging public health impacts, from exacerbating physical illnesses to triggering major mental health crises. This episode investigates how the climate crisis is a public health crisis, and how addressing it is crucial for protecting our well-being.

The fifth and final episode in the series, CLIMATE+ COLONIALISM explores the impact of colonial legacies on the climate crisis. In 2022, the IPCC finally acknowledged a longstanding claim from the Global South: that climate change is rooted in the legacy of colonialism. This wasn’t news to billions of people who’ve long known that the majority suffer for a problem they didn’t primarily cause. Colonialism exploited people and resources, destroying ecosystems and ravaging the earth in pursuit of profit. Today, the legacy persists: the richest 1% pollute as much as the poorest two-thirds, often at the expense of the Global South. The episode highlights how addressing climate change means recognising this legacy, demanding reparations, and pursuing a just transition.

CLIMATE+ is the latest of numerous collaborations between Oxfam and Earthrise. Last year Earthrise collaborated on Oxfam’s ‘Make Polluters Pay’ campaign, amplifying report findings and Oxfam’s in-person activations.

It will launch across social and digital channels on Monday 8th July with a new episode being distributed weekly until Monday 5th August.
