Description
Assi is a courtroom drama directed by Anubhav Sinha, produced by Benaras Media Works and T-Series Films, starring Taapsee Pannu, Kani Kusruti, Revathy, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Naseeruddin Shah, Supriya Pathak and Seema Pahwa. The film follows a schoolteacher's fight for justice after an assault, and the lawyer who takes on both the case and the system around it. Following its theatrical run, the film premiered digitally on Zee 5 on 17 April 2026. The objective was to drive viewership for the digital premiere. The approach was to make the film's central number impossible to scroll past.
The title carries the whole idea. Assi means eighty, the number of rape cases reported in India every day. The campaign refused to treat this as a background statistic and built every execution around a single tension: the same number that India celebrates in one context is ignored in another.
That tension was made literal during the IPL. When an 80 by Virat Kohli trends within minutes, 80 daily rape cases barely register. The campaign entered live cricket conversation on X to place the two side by side, turning celebration into confrontation under #AssiOnZee5. The same contrast ran in print across high-incidence regions, with front-page placements in Dainik Jagran positioned against match coverage, taking the conversation directly into households rather than leaving it on a feed. Outdoor extended it to the street. Billboards and digital screens at traffic signals asked commuters, in Hindi, why they stop at a red light but the 80 daily cases do not stop. A routine glance became an unavoidable question.
Two social interventions carried the amplification. First, the review system was reframed. Reviewers publicly rated Assi one star with a single clarification: the star was not for the film, it was for the society the film describes. A rating mechanic became a mirror. Second, male influencers positioned the film as something men should avoid watching. "Men should not watch Assi" was written to provoke, not prevent. The reverse psychology drove curiosity and scale, delivering over 2 million impressions on its own.
The campaign reached 14 million viewers with 1.4 billion reach, driving 38.9 million interactions and 218,000 mentions, and the film crossed 100 million watch minutes on the platform. The response was not uniform. Love, grief, anger and solidarity coexisted in the comments, which was the point. Audiences were not reacting to a promotion. They were reacting to a reality the campaign had refused to let them look away from.
