Yi Peng Lantern Festival
Description
This poster series visually interprets the Yi Peng Lantern Festival through two distinct yet complementary artistic directions, reflecting both the cultural depth and emotional spirit of the event.
The first approach adopts a textured, illustrative style inspired by traditional engravings and vintage travel posters. Warm golden tones, hand-drawn linework, and glowing light effects evoke the sacred atmosphere of lanterns rising above Chiang Mai’s historic architecture. The composition emphasizes scale and elevation, symbolizing hope, release, and the spiritual connection between earth and sky during the festival nights.
The second approach shifts to a minimal, modern illustration style, focusing on human interaction and ritual. Clean shapes, soft gradients, and pastel hues highlight the intimate moment of releasing a lantern. The presence of a single figure reinforces the personal and emotional meaning of Yi Peng—making wishes, letting go, and embracing renewal—while maintaining cultural respect through costume-inspired silhouettes and restrained visual language.
Across both posters:
Lanterns act as the central visual metaphor for light, wishes, and collective memory.
Color palettes balance warmth and calm to reflect night skies illuminated by floating flames.
Bilingual typography (Arabic and English) bridges cultures and broadens accessibility while maintaining clarity and hierarchy.
The project aims to promote the Yi Peng Lantern Festival not just as a tourist event, but as a cultural experience rooted in ritual, emotion, and shared humanity, adaptable for print, outdoor advertising, and digital platforms.
