For endurance athletes, the night before a race is one of the most disciplined and restrictive moments. No alcohol, no excess, and no room for mistakes after months of preparation. But Heineken 0.0 set out to challenge one of those long-standing rules: what if having a beer the night before didn’t have to be off-limits?

That’s the idea behind “The Night Before,” an initiative that reimagines one of the most sacred rituals in sports. Because Heineken 0.0 contains no alcohol, athletes could enjoy the experience of having a beer without compromising their performance for race day.

As part of Heineken 0.0’s sponsorship of IRONMAN 70.3 Puerto Rico, the brand hosted a Welcome Party at the official athlete hotel the night before the race. Competitors gathered in a relaxed environment where they could enjoy food and Heineken 0.0, celebrating their preparation while staying true to their discipline.

What athletes didn’t know was that this moment would become part of the idea itself.

During the event, images of athletes toasting with Heineken 0.0 were captured. The following day, during the running segment of the race, a giant screen along the course showed runners live as they passed by. In that moment, the screen split in two: on one side, their live image running; on the other, a photo of them from the night before enjoying a Heineken 0.0, accompanied by the message: “Drink the night before. Run the day after. Now you can.”

By connecting these two moments, the initiative demonstrated that the ritual of having a beer can still exist, even around one of the most demanding endurance events in the world.

Heineken 0.0 is currently the number one selling non-alcoholic beer worldwide, reinforcing its leadership in a growing category and its role in creating new occasions where beer was previously not possible.

The initiative was developed by de la Cruz Ogilvy Puerto Rico, an agency known for connecting brands with cultural moments in unexpected ways.
