QSTNMRK? Collective and ChangeTheRef have launched a provocative art project titled The American Roulette to spotlight the gun violence epidemic in the USA. On average, 327 Americans are shot every day, with 118 fatalities, and the country has more guns than people—making Americans 26 times more likely to be shot than in any other high-income nation.
Set to expose these grim statistics, The American Roulette is an art experiment designed as a dystopian game. Participants are challenged to predict which U.S. states will have no shootings the following day, with correct guesses winning $5,000. If the country manages to go 24 hours without any gun violence during the project, one lucky player will win a $1,000,000 prize. Using live data from the Gun Violence Archive, the project aims to stir national debate and demand accountability from state senators via social media.
The project, scheduled to run alongside Powerball days, includes three games:
