Riders' Rights

“Riders’ Rights” is a campaign developed by the Zurich-based agency Freundliche Grüsse for the Syndicom union to educate Uber Eats delivery drivers about their labor rights. Uber Eats classifies drivers as self-employed, even though the Swiss Federal Supreme Court has ruled against “bogus self-employment.” As a result, drivers lack basic labor protections such as a stable income, vacation time, and social security.

Since delivery drivers often work under isolated and precarious conditions, the campaign took an unconventional approach: it turned the Uber Eats platform itself into a communication channel—without the platform’s knowledge.
The approach is simple: A popular Zurich pizzeria was registered as a restaurant on Uber Eats for a short time. During this period, activists and customers placed numerous orders . While the delivery drivers picked up the orders, they were informed on-site about their rights.

In addition to direct engagement during deliveries, the campaign included posters, flyers, a multilingual information website, and legal experts on-site. The goal is to raise awareness among couriers and put pressure on Uber to recognize its role as an employer and improve working conditions.
