Description
Often people read a short note in some media, and based on it, they form their own opinion about the event. It is likely that people all around the world are now forming their impression of a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. It is difficult to fight this approach, because it is not possible to teach the whole world media literacy in a year or two. Therefore, it is important to work not only with the end consumer of media products, but also with the media directly.
In partnership with WithUkraine media, we developed a series of five Instagram Reels showing the most egregious examples of international media inaccuracies in the news and highlighting the potential negative consequences. Of course, they did not forget about the correct wording, which should be used in the future.
Topic cases and the texts were provided by the WithUkraine team. Visualization was on our side. We chose a quick paced video collage style for this project. It helps to depict the problematics raised in the video in the most efficient way. It is equally effective with sound on and off, as both options are quite common for the Instagram platform.
The results:
284,000+ views, 4,600+ likes, 400+ saves and an additional 50,000+ Twitter reach.
The project was realized with the support of «Public Diplomacy Platform» and ERIM in the framework of the Stiykist’ Programme – a 30-month project funded by the European Union and run by ERIM in partnership with Black Sea Trust, East Europe Foundation, Human Rights House Foundation and Human Rights House Tbilisi. The project aims to strengthen the resilience and effectiveness of war affected CSOs and civil society actors affected by the war in Ukraine, including independent media and human rights defenders.
