The story of Colter Wall continues to unfold with Little Songs, the Saskatchewan songwriter’s latest collection of simple truths stretched to their furthest ends. His first album since 2020’s Western Swing & Waltzes and Other Punchy Songs, this slow-burning set finds Wall maturing through imaginative storytelling and a natural sense of melody. Like Springsteen on Nebraska, Wall surveys mankind in all its frail states – betrayed, lonely, desperate, dangerous – as if to remind us how much we have to lose, how easily it can all fall apart. He does it all with a voice that’s craggy and subtly impassioned, but never shouted out in defiance of the law of gravity. It’s a laconic individualism forged on the wide-open prairies of Western Canada, a quality that gives his songs a sense of cowboy wisdom that’s triple his years. On the record’s sweeping opener, “Prairie Evening/Sagebrush Waltz,” that conviction is evident as Wall summons the vast expanse of his homeland before shifting into a waltz tempo to sing about sage on our souls’ shoes. This is a layered and dynamic journey that transcends geographical boundaries while delving into the rhythms of rural work and social life, sometimes lively, often introspective. The entire LP was recorded at Yellowdog Studios in Wimberly, Texas – where Wall also recorded his debut, Songs of the Plains and 2023’s Western Swing & Waltzes And Other Punchy Songs – and co-produced with multi-instrumentalist Patrick Lyons.
