Crappy ad, very forced visual. If this works, then anyone can produce a PS2 ads.
- Asian guy enjoying dim sum (with those iconic PS shapes)
- Asian guy playing mahjong (made of PS shapes)

The list goes on.....

Neither one of these ads shows an advantage to the brand or gives the consumer any benefit to purchasing it. If they were hoping to build brand recognition, they've done it - as the console whose ads appeal least to consumers when measured against the X-Box and Wii.

now can you point out any PS2 or xbox ad that would give you an "advantage to the brand or gives the consumer any benefit to purchasing it"?
I can't, yet those ads by TBWA Paris for instance won everything there is and I'm really sure they did a heck of a job in building the brand and making people buy PS2s.
yet even more, while for instance, you can't easily see a difference between nike's and adidas' ads, at least (most of) the ps2 work plays with a distinctive feature of the brand.

There's plenty of X-Box and Wii ads that demonstrate an advantage and benefit. For example Wii uses its controller as the focus thus providing an advantage and X-Box live points to its first and third party games plus Live service as brand advantages.

This PS2 ad doesn't point out any advantage, unless you consider being so creepy you have lots of time alone to play it an advantage. Furthermore PS3 sales have been dismal (1)(2). I haven't seen any awards that these ads have won - and I don't expect they'll get any.

I can easily see a difference between Nike and Adidas ads - though that is another discussion altogether and doesn't have anything to do with how bad this ad is.

Advertising should sell. These ads at best don't do that and at worst discourage sales.

PS3 got on the market too late to become a success.
your overwhelming belief that advertising is the sole source of a product's fortunes is misguided to me.
advertising can build brands. it moves the boxes off shelf only in case of the worst case uncreative sale promos.
which is not to say I like these ads a lot. but to me they ain't that much worse on the idea side than the famous adultery, bloodcells etc. work by tbwa (they just lack exceptional art direction).

I don't recall ever stating that advertising is the sole reason for a products fortune.

I will however make the point that if the advertising you're choosing does NOT lead to an increase in sales then its not very effective at all is it? Companies don't advertise to inflate their agencies margins, they do it to move merchandise and improve brand image.

These ads do not. It therefore does not matter how much they look like their favorite campaigns of the past, or even if they've won awards. They're not working. A good marketing department will measure this and change strategy. A bad one will blame the consumer for not being "smart" enough to get it and keep running it.

I should try and dig up an article I was reading the other day about how many ads that win big at the awards shows get very small releases or aren't used on consumers at all because they're not effective. I will post it here if I can remember where I saw it.

The entire feeling of this ad is sleazy and dirty. I can't imagine how this would benefit the Sony PS2 brand at all?
