I believe it's a play on "Smoking while pregnant can harm your baby." Hence the pregnancy reference.

i like how they are trying to get across messages that are blatently obvious to parallel the obvious that smoking cigarettes is dangerous to your health. wondering how effective it is. where are my smokers who are trying to quit? hmm, where are you? what do you think about these ads?

Everybody cares about life. That's engraved in our DNA. What you're probably doing is finding a well sounding excuse to avoid internal conflict — you rationally know you should not smoke, but addiction makes you smoke. Is that the case? I truly despise certain tobacco companies for playing dirty.

it's called cognitive dissonance - similar to if you loved eating meat, but had a major personal conflict because you were against the slaughter of animals. I know this because I'm a smoker as well, and while this ad wouldn't make me quit, I think it's a good try. When you're talkin to smokers, you're dealing with a lethal dosage of denial (Like sayin that you don't care about life), or saying you'll quit before it really affects your health. That said, I'm not sure if there is really any campaign, print, tv, radio or otherwise, that would succesfully get someone to quit smoking - it's unfortunately something that only that person can do - for his own reasons and under his own terms.

Spot on PaulyG. We all know that smoking is bad, unhealthy, stupid, .... but....
I don't think any one ad is going to make me stop either, but keep pushing it, keep hitting me over the head and maybe one day it'll help me smarten up.

Yes, I do have that personal conflict with meat eating somewhat.

Has anyone ever heard about a smoker that quit after reading an ad? Any ad? It's always waste of time. Besides, let them smoke in peace.

Anybody remember Tracy Wong's anti-tobacco print/outdoor campaign out of Goldsmith/Jeffrey back in ohhh, 1992, 93?
It was such a deceptively simple campaign with a surgeon general's (cigarette) warning label on everyday objects like a banana, a loaf of bread and a bottle of spring water. The line underneath simply aked "Would you drink it? So why do you still smoke?"
His visual thinking was way ahead of its time back then.
Same device, same message here, after almost fifteen years.

i agree with Arato... nobody quits smoking coz of an ad!! thats silly to waist time doing ads for this, i'd say for the smokers including my self... IF YOU WANNA QUIT IT..JUST DO IT!!!

Why don't we pressure tobacco companies to close for good? Because it would be a much greater task than convince 1 billion smokers to quit, one by one, right? Just for the records: I'm not a smoker and I don't give a damn if people smoke.

I don't think anyone who quits because of these ads was a real smoker to begin with.

The ad however may strike a conversation which may lead into a decision to quit, which eventually may lead in quitting.
