Really beautiful pulpish illustrations for this series. It dismays that they then go and refer to what looks a dead ringer for beautiful traditional-media tone-building as unwanted body hair. But, OK, that's the punchline.
I like this in spite of that.
About a 3 for the ad, 10 for the illustrations - 6.5.
That's it.
No, no, no, Billough. Whether the illustrations are good is irrelevant if the campaign as a whole is a wreck. Exploiting past tragedies (Titanic and Hindenburg) to market a body SHAVER is downright stupid.
I hear what you're saying, and yet...
'Can't get away from the simple fact that if these illustrations appeared in another context, I'd give them a second glance. They could easily have been done by a lesser-known but interesting old school pulpster such as Rod Ruth or A. Leydenfrost. So, as happens from time to time, I have to give the illustrator (er, or the shaver in this case) all props. -- Even as I realize that that puts me at odds with chapter-and-verse of the legitimate world of advertising (speaking of oxymorons).
