This ad was just awful. Like really bad. I understand what GAP is trying to do and it’s not working. They are trying to emulate the success that Skittles and Fiat has with their wacky, weird, and somewhat humorous commercials. The ads that GAP is trying to copy have went viral on a small scale because they were at least a bit entertaining and worth sharing with friends. This is ad as bad as the Safe Auto commercials and has no chance of going viral. It’s just really dumb. The tag line at the end makes it even worse. “Dress Normal?” Seriously? What does that even mean? Are you basically saying that anyone that wears other brands isn’t dressing normally? If so, are you assuming that people want to dress normally, whatever that means, and fit in? People want to express themselves through their own individual style and saying dress normal just pushes consumers even farther away if those consumers value individuality through fashion. The background song was also not catchy, nor recognizable. Maybe if GAP spent a bit more money on a popular song instead of whatever they decided to play, this commercial would have been a little better and not as annoying.

While I agree that these ads are terrible, Dress Normal is a positively brilliant line against the work.

Clothing won't make you unique; you make yourself unique. Dress normal and just do you.
