KitKat

The KitKat Heist (case study)

Agencies: VML VML UK Burson

Description

Most brands treat crises as something to hide. But in today's media environment, unusual real-world events can generate more attention than even the largest advertising campaigns. When 12 tonnes of KitKat bars were stolen just before Easter, the incident had all the ingredients of a story people would naturally want to follow.

Instead of quietly managing the theft, KitKat turned it into a global detective story. The brand embraced the incident publicly and invited consumers to help solve the mystery, transforming a supply chain crisis into a participatory campaign that reinforced KitKat's playful personality.

Created by VML and Burson, the campaign unfolded in two phases. First, KitKat announced the theft across its social channels, turning the disappearance of 413,793 chocolate bars into a public mystery that quickly attracted media attention and online speculation. Then the brand launched the Stolen KitKat Tracker, a digital tool allowing consumers to check batch codes and identify potentially stolen products. The activation encouraged people to become "chocolate detectives," extending engagement far beyond traditional crisis communications.

What began as a potential Easter disaster became a global earned-media success. More than 115 brands joined the conversation organically, helping amplify the story worldwide. KitKat captured 44% share of voice on Meta during Easter, nearly three times that of its nearest competitor, while the Stolen KitKat Tracker generated more than 2.2 million engagements. The campaign demonstrated how transparency, humour, and participation can transform a business challenge into a powerful brand-building moment.

This professional campaign titled 'The KitKat Heist (case study)' was published in United Kingdom and United States in June, 2026.
