Description
In case of homesickness, break wrapper.
The things we miss the most are usually the things we notice the least.
For generations, rye bread has been part of everyday life in Denmark. It’s always there—on breakfast tables, in lunchboxes and at family dinners. So familiar, in fact, that many Danes had stopped noticing it. Until they left.
Research by Denmark’s largest travel company, Spies, revealed that rye bread is the food Danes miss the most while travelling abroad. More surprisingly, one in ten travellers starts missing it on the very first day of their holiday.
For Schulstad, Denmark’s biggest rye bread brand, that wasn’t a communications problem. It was a product opportunity.
Instead of launching another campaign reminding people to appreciate rye bread, Schulstad created something they could actually take with them.
Together with Spies, the brand introduced The Emergency Slice—a single slice of rye bread, vacuum-sealed to stay fresh up to four times longer than conventionally packaged rye bread, while being 95% lighter and 90% smaller than a regular loaf. Small enough for hand luggage. Reliable enough to outlast the holiday.
Every traveller received an Emergency Slice while boarding their summer holiday flight. Not to eat immediately. But for the moment they inevitably realised what home tasted like.
Borrowing the familiar language of emergency equipment transformed an ordinary slice of rye bread into something reassuring simply because it was there.
The Emergency Slice wasn’t designed to solve hunger. It was designed to solve homesickness. A simple slice of rye bread became a conversation starter, a travel companion and perhaps Denmark’s smallest souvenir—reminding people that the things we take for granted are often the ones we’d miss the most.
The campaign reached 4.45 million people, generated 11.13 million impressions, delivered a social engagement rate 20× above benchmark, and helped sell an additional 127,000 loaves of Schulstad rye bread.
Because sometimes the strongest reminder of home isn’t waiting for you when you return.
It’s the one you pack before you leave.
