Success creates imitators. As one of the world's most popular mobile games, Clash Royale has inspired countless copycat titles that mimic its characters, gameplay mechanics, and visual identity. While these knock-offs compete for players' attention, they also reveal something powerful: millions of people are actively looking for the Clash Royale experience. Instead of fighting copycats through legal action, the brand saw an opportunity to turn imitation into acquisition.

"Copycats Welcome" transformed counterfeit games from a threat into a recruitment channel. Rather than issuing takedowns, Clash Royale invited players of knock-off games to bring their progress into the authentic game and exchange it for real rewards. The campaign reframed copycat players not as competitors, but as future members of the Clash Royale community.

Developed by DAVID New York, the campaign launched with a film in which iconic Clash Royale characters are pulled into bizarre knock-off universes populated by low-budget versions of themselves. After battling their counterfeit counterparts, they escape back to the real arena, reinforcing the difference between imitation and the original.

The campaign was supported by a dedicated online platform where players could submit evidence of their progress in copycat games and convert it into rewards inside Clash Royale, including free gold and Wild Cards. By rewarding rather than punishing players, the brand created a frictionless path from imitation to authenticity.

The campaign generated immediate engagement, with more than 2.3 million players transferring their progress within the first five days. By turning counterfeit competition into a player acquisition engine, Clash Royale strengthened its leadership position while demonstrating a more creative alternative to traditional copyright enforcement. Instead of fighting copycats, the brand made them work for it.
