Not without labouring the copy into an explanatory sentence no, I don't think so. "More frightening than the real thing before it went extinct" doesn't have the same punch. "Dangerous and extinct" might be a nice tangent but I think this 'before/after' treatment is absolutely right.

I think it would be more important to reason WHY is it more terrifying than just stating the fact heard by all of us many times before. I mean, not in a long bodycopy but on concept level. The ad is good for a bad strategy imho.
