According to your own rationale, ALL of these ads are working just fine.
Let's not be so quick to labeling others' work "lame" just because of your lack of knowledge or familiarity with the objects being depicted here, shall we?
Besides, these only ran in their respective cities. They don't expect you to be able to connect the dots especially when you don't even live here, let alone in that particular city...

We liked it when we saw the huge billboard here in Manhattan near Times Square. Got a little chuckle out of all of us.
And as a native of San Francisco, I would've responded positively if I'd seen this board back home somewhere.

I think it's a very cute and effective regional-specific campaign. Simple and to the point.

Yikes, these ads only work for the target group and not us fast-food-ad-afficionados ;-)

The ads depict two symbolic animals for the city and adds the rabbit, since it is coming to this city now.

Can somebody explain to me why CP+B has two different automakers as clients? I'd understand if it were Mini and BMW (since they're owned by the same people), but Mini and VW? Is that even ethical?

CP+B had Mini until they dropped them for the far bigger Volkswagen account after one head marketing officer (Kerri Martin) switched from Mini USA to Volkswagen of USA and lured them away. The stuff you see from CP+B regarding mini is from the time before V-dub
