Making people fat is exactly what they are trying to flee from. They recognised years ago that that is the biggest threat to their continued success, and this is part of what is probably their most important long-term marketing program for the next decade or so.

Perhaps the healthier menu options have not reached the land of the fat yet, but they are making a big impact in parts of the world where most people weigh less than a small car.

You guys have never been near a fast food account in your miniscule careers, have you?

McD's and every major fast food brand in the world has been going the healthy route for several years now - not just rebranding themselves, but actually changing their menu. I believe in certain countries, McD's actually have salad bars.

Yep, they offer a variety on salads in NZ, which I believe was one of their test markets for this. They have done for about 5 years now. A lot of other healthy options too. I admit I was cynical when I first heard the plan, but they have delivered. The salads are not bad, and you can now get a much healthier meal at McD's than you'd have thought possible.

A lot of benefits for McD's. They know times have changed and didn't want to only have the old fatty menu. Women in particular are happier to bring their kids if they themselves can have a salad or low fat, low carb option, and also like to be able to get their kids a happy meal but choose a fruit pack or sliced carrots instead of fries.

cool ambient. but i do agree with scuba steve that this would be better for whole foods. not that mcdonald's doesn't have a right to claim fresh ingredients (if that's what they want to say). it just feels more like it would be a direct connection to a natural foods client and no matter what mcdonald's does in their advertising, people will still think of them as fast food.

The ad is not bad, but not as good as the 'FRESH" growing billboard that did the same idea better, and won metal at Cannes last year.

And yes, McD's sell carrots, certainly in New Zealand. It is part of their new healthier menu options thing. Parents can say no to chips (uh, I mean fries) and yes to fruit, or carrot sticks, or fresh raw corn, in their kids' happy meals. McD's are making a genuine effort to offer healthier alternatives: fresh fruit, salads, wraps, etc. They also serve decent coffee now. Like real coffee.

Perhaps the fresh menu options have not reached the US yet. Perhaps it never will. I can't imagine it would have much appeal to the fattest nation on earth.
