2019 Clio Juror: Alice Chou
The 15-minute short film Single Belief invited the collaboration of internationally renowned Golden Lion winners, Tsai Ming-Liang and Lee Kang-Sheng. At the location of the pair’s first film, Ximending (Taipei), Lee can be seen standing amid the crowded streets, restaurants, temple entrance, theater street, etc. Despite the pointing, curiosity, and indifference of passersby, his forward gaze remains calm and steady. Lee’s stationary pose symbolizes his insistence, throughout his film career, on his own creative vision. It also communicates the Glenlivet’s “Single Belief”, which has never changed since 1824.
Using an experimental shooting method, the camera was fixed on a tripod in Ximending, after which both the camera and Lee Kang-sheng remained stationary. Passersby naturally entered the shot, which captured their truest reactions, thus creating an extraordinary record and observation of human nature. Additionally, in order to express the passage of time, and the pure taste of life experience, a vintage song by a male singer is used as BGM.
The scene is imbued with a life-gazing mood, resulting in a rich flavor.
This film was exclusively shown in special “The Glenlivet Whisky-Tasting Theaters," with nearly 20 screenings held throughout Taiwan. Whisky lovers could enjoy a drink of their preferred spirit, reminded of The Glenlivet’s brand power with every sip. In an era of constant change, they could deeply experience the Glenlivet’s quietly expressed, never- changing “Single Belief”—and its courage to remain unaffected by external factors.
