With ‘Nian-tastic New Start’, TNB seeks to highlight the spirit of joy and unity that underlies
our Chinese New Year traditions.
The film takes inspiration from the legend of Nian, which tells of villagers terrorised every
lunar New Year by an ancient monster called Nian. Along came a beggar who taught them
the key to defeating the monster – by scaring him off with red colours, loud sounds and
bright lights. It is said that this is the reason for many traditions such as wearing red, having
cheerful family reunions, decorating the house with bright lights and more. Filled with action and comedy, it also features a modern twist in a period drama setting.
Beyond the film, we created an entire 'Nian-tastic' cinematic universe that people can discover. A throw-away phrase at the end of the film leads people to interacting with social content "curated" by our main character.
